Holy Mother Sri Sarada Devi teaches that remembrance of God leads to spiritual awakening: "As you smell the fragrance of a flower while handling it or the smell of sandalwood while rubbing it against a stone, so you obtain spiritual awakening by constantly thinking of God." She said, "If you love a human being, you will have to suffer for it. He is blessed, indeed, who can love God alone. There is no suffering in loving God. Be devoted to God and take shelter at His feet. It is enough to remember that there is someone-call Him Father or Mother-who is always protecting you."
Prayer as a means to remember God: Prayer helps us remember God and grow in devotion to him. Sri Ramakrishna teaches that through prayer all individual souls can be united to the Supreme Soul. Prayer is a spontaneous conversation a devotee has with God. Just as a child makes its needs known to its mother, through prayer a devotee expresses his needs to God: he prays for purity, devotion, faith, strength, discrimination, dispassion, and so on. God does not care how well articulated the prayer is but how sincere it is. Says Sri Ramakrishna, "Don't you know that God is the Inner Guide? He sees the longing of our heart and the yearning of our soul. Suppose a man has several sons. The older boys address him distinctly as 'Baba' or 'Papa', but the babies can at best call him 'Ba' or 'Pa'. Now, will the father be angry with those who address him in this indistinct way? The father knows that they too are calling him, only they cannot pronounce his name well. All children are the same to the father."
A devotee asked Swami Adbhutananda, a disciple of Sri Ramakrishna: "Maharaj, we have not seen God; how can we depend on Him? We do not know how to surrender to Him." The Swami replied: "You are asking about prayer. Well, you know God's name; you can begin with His name as your guide. Don't you send your application for a job to the manager of a company without ever having seen him? Your interview with the manager depends upon your sending your application to him. You write the application thus: 'Sir, please appoint me for the job; I shall be extremely happy to serve you; I promise my unswerving obedience to you,' and so on. And you write all this without seeing the manager, don't you? So, similarly, you can send an application to the Lord. However, this application is not to be written on paper, but on the pages of one's mind."
Japa, or repetition of a holy name (mantra), is a powerful means to remember God. Japa purifies the mind and leads us to God-realization. God dwells in the hearts of all beings as their inmost Consciousness. The more we remember God the more detached we become from the objects in the world. As our devotion deepens, we grow in detachment from our body, senses, and our restless mind.
Sri Ramakrishna explains how japa transforms our being: "Japa means silently repeating God's name in solitude. When you chant His name with single-minded devotion you can see God's form and realize Him. Suppose there is a piece of timber sunk in the water of the Ganges and fastened with a chain to the bank. You proceed link by link, holding to the chain, and you dive into the water and follow the chain. Finally you are able to reach the timber. In the same way, by repeating God's name you become absorbed in Him and finally realize Him."
