Centenary Celebration of Swami Vivekananda in America and the World's Parliament of Religions

On November 5-7, 1993 a very memorable series of events was presented by Swami Adiswarananda in commemoration of the Centenary of the World's Parliament of Religions and Swami Vivekananda's coming to America including an interfaith tribute at the United Nations, a celebration and concert held at New York City's Saint Peter's Church, which featured the seventy musicians of the Inter-School Orchestra of New York, a special service at The Center, and a Cenntenial Tribute Concert held at the Brick Presbyterian Church of New York, which featured internationally acclaimed soprano saxophonist Paul Winter, and the extraordinary Yale University Glee Club of one hundred voices.

Among the distinguished participants at the United Nations Tribute were Honorable C.R. Gharekhan, Special Representative of the Secretary General of the United Nations; S.S. Ray, Ambassador of India to the United States; M.H. Ansari, Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations; Juliet Hollister, Founder of the Temple of Understanding; Harold Sims, Martin Luther King, Jr. Center; Dr. Jerome J. Pollitt, Professor and Former Dean of the Graduate School, Yale University; Susan B. Matheson, Curator of Ancient Art, Yale University Art Gallery; Swamis of the Ramakrishna Order; religious leaders of diffenent faiths, scholars, and musical artists.

Founded in 1933 and located on New York City's Upper Eastside on 94th Street between 5th and Madison Ave. The Ramakrishna-Vivekananda Center of New York is an accredited branch of the Ramakrishna Order of India. The Center bases its teachings on the System of Vedanta, which combines both the religion and philosophy of Hinduism. The Center seeks to stimulate the growth of the individual's innate spirituality through lectures, discourses, publications, and individual guidance.
